The first generation of Intelligent Agents
Their role consists of performing simple searches very quickly. In fact, they do nothing other than use the existing search engines (Lycos, AltaVista, Yahoo....) by feeding them successive requests. Their main qualities are their high speed (several seconds) and their cost (the service is free) but they are somewhat superficial in their searches and do not go to much depth.They are very popular amongst students and those who have time to spare....

The second generation of Intelligent Agents
The second category of agents consists
of much more developed software that perform more focussed requests. At
each request, they not only find the sites where the information can be
extracted from, but also, go into the document to analyse, sort and save
the product of their labour on your hard disk! Unfortunately, although
they are more competent than others, they also have faults. You have to
train them, they are often very slow and the results are not always those
intended... They cannot actually be called "intelligent"....Sometimes,
they can take several hours to answer your question.

The third generation of Intelligent Agents
The third catagory
consists of even more sophisticated agents. These love to be in contact
with mankind. They have been built for the most difficult and focussed
searches. But they are humble, they know their limits and they may even
ask the operator for guidance. Hence, a symbiosis is created which allows
hitherto unseen interactions. With the agents and mankind working together,
all your needs for information, of the most strategic and confidential
nature, can be saisfied. Unfortunately, they are still very few...
